Dear Mae Jemison Parents and Guardians,
In a year with many challenges, it is more important than ever for our students to have perseverance and resilience, which are necessary qualities of a growth mindset. A growth mindset thrives on challenge and sees failure not as evidence of unintelligence, but as a heartening springboard for growth and for stretching our existing abilities. A growth mindset creates a passion for learning rather than a hunger for approval. Its hallmark is the conviction that human qualities like intelligence and creativity, and even relational capacities like love and friendship, can be cultivated through effort and deliberate practice. As we continue to move forward during difficult times, let’s remind our children that their growth is a direct result of their efforts. Let’s continue to push them to strive for excellence, to grow from their mistakes, and to understand that although they might not always be successful with something on the first try, they can master skills through perseverance and grit. As always, if you have any questions, concerns, or comments, you can reach me at 708-225-3636 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
