Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year! As I write this letter, I am full of excitement as we get closer to the first day of school – the first day that ALL of our students are back in our building! For some of our students, the first day of school this year will be the first time they have been in school physically since March 2020, and my team and I cannot wait to welcome them back into school! We have missed having the entire student body in our building, and our entire staff is looking forward to having our students return to in-person learning this school year. We understand that this time has been a very difficult one for so many people, and that we are still dealing with COVID-19. However, it is imperative that we work together to get all of our students back to in-person learning. Staff, parents, and community members worked collaboratively on a reopening plan to ensure a safe and productive school year for all students. The Mae Jemison team is committed to providing students with opportunities to be successful – academically, emotionally, and socially.
You may have various questions about the start of the school year, so the following information is provided for your assistance. All students are expected to return to FULL in-person learning. Any parents who are uncomfortable sending their children back to school in-person, must provide a written letter to the Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Kimako Patterson, for approval or disapproval from the Board of Education.
All students will have their temperatures checked daily by staff and be required to wear a mask when entering into the school building, throughout the school day, as well as when riding the school bus. In addition, all students will be given a COVID test on their first day of attendance, Wednesday August 25, 2021 (kindergarten through 5th grade students). Our building will open at 7:30 a.m. on that day for any parent/guardian that would like to bring their child in early for testing. Parents/guardians are able to stay with their child/children during testing. All visitors to our building will have their temperature checked and must wear a mask. The first day of school for pre-kindergarten students will be Tuesday, September, 7, 2021. Pre-kindergarten students will report no earlier on the regular start time (8:15 a.m.) on their first day. Beginning Thursday, September 30, 2021, all students will be tested weekly. It is imperative that all students are in attendance on our designated testing day (Thursdays) to ensure that their learning remains uninterrupted. Students who are absent on our scheduled testing day will still be required to test upon their return.
We understand that these procedures will take time to become accustomed to, but we are confident that you will support our every effort to keep all of our students safe.
For the 2021-2022 school year, students can come in for breakfast beginning at 8:15 a.m. Please remember that there is no supervision prior to 8:15 a.m., and students should not report earlier than that time. Instruction will begin promptly at 8:45 a.m., and it is essential that your child be present every day for learning before the start of the instructional day. Student dismissal is at 2:55 p.m., and students who are being picked up from school will be in the area by the large parking lot on the side of our building. School supply lists for all grade levels are located on our district website at https://www.phsd144.net/Page/3969. You can also get to that page by going to https://www.phsd144.net/, clicking on the student services tab, and then clicking on the registration tab. All Prairie-Hills School District #144 students wear uniforms. Pre-kindergarten through 5th grade students wear navy blue bottoms with a choice of navy or white shirts (with collars). Students wear a fully enclosed shoe (solid color - choice of black, brown, white, or navy) with laces that match the shoe.
At Mae Jemison, we believe it is essential for families and school staff to work together and share responsibility for student success. This has always been important, but during this time it is even more critical for us to work collaboratively to help our children reach their full potential. We are dedicated in our effort to help all children reach their full potential, and we value family members’ expertise about their children as we work to achieve this goal. Our staff can learn ways to best help our students when we have information from you. Please feel free to contact myself or any staff member via email or phone if you have any comments, questions, or suggestions. You are an essential component to making Mae Jemison a successful school and we thank you for your dedication to your children and to our school.
