My name is Cheryl (Dykas) Fierke. I am the Speech Language Pathologist at Highlands Elementary School.
This is my 4th year working at Highlands, however, I have worked as a Speech Language Pathologist in the schools since
1978. Yes, 1978 !!!!! Most of my work, before coming to District 144, was in Oak Lawn School District 122.
I started in District 144 at Chateaux Elementary School in August of 2013. I have also "filled in" at Field Crest,
Markham Park, and Prairie Hills Jr. High when needed.
I am usually at Highlands School on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. I work with students who have differences in
sound production, students who need help learning vocabulary, grammar, and other language skills, students who
stutter, and students who have difficulty in other areas of communication.
I work with students individually or in small goups of 2 or 3. My lessons are developed to target the needs of each student.
I graduated from St. Xavier College (Chicago) in 1976 with a Bachelors Degree and in 1978 from Northern Illinois University with
a Masters Degree. I have continued to take classes to maintain my skills in the field of communication disorders.
I am married, have a son, Michael, who is 33 years old, graduated from Illinois State University, and works in business with
computer programs. I have a daughter, Jillian, 23 yrs old, adopted from South Korea, who also graduated from Illinois State University
this past May 11th with a degree in Fashion Design and Merchandising. She is currently training for a job at Nordstrom's
We have two dogs, Gypsy, a Wheaton Terrier, who is afraid of strangers, including "Alexa" and a Beagle -Jack Russel mix who is very friendly and social and
gets called outside by the neighbor children to play fetch.
I enjoy being a member of the District 144 Educational Community and working with its students.
If you have concerns regarding your child's communication skills, I can be reached at Highlands Elementary School
on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
